Covington High School Yearbook Project

Fellow Citizens,
Keeping a record of local historical documents is one of the Covington Public Library’s most honored responsibilities. It is through the free examination of these documents that we may revisit Covington’s past, both now and for years, perhaps even centuries, to come. In so doing we can better understand the richness that has made Covington the special community that we all know.
It has recently come to the attention of the Library and her Friends that there is an area of important historical documentation that begs to be updated. I’m referring to the Library’s collection of Covington High School Yearbooks. It is far from complete with many years missing. So we have made it an ongoing project for the Friends of the Covington Public Library to reach out in a concerted effort to complete this collection of valuable books. And that is where you come in. We are asking all of you, our Covington compatriots from today and the past to help us to fill in these gaps. For it is only through your efforts that this project can ever be completed, or for that matter, even started.
We ask that you search your attics, talk to relatives and friends, and send letters to past acquaintances. Think of anyone who might have a long forgotten copy of one of these missing Covington High School Yearbooks and let them know of our need. A donation of any of these books will be so deeply appreciated and will be in our library for all to see for what will hopefully be endless years into our future.
Thanks to all of you who take an interest and are willing to give a helping hand in this community project.
Sincerely,
Bob Dickinson

Historical Information
There have been 3 separate Covington High School buildings in use since 1876. We have been unable to determine whether a yearbook was published for each of these years or what form the earliest yearbooks may have taken.
The first book in the Covington Public Library collection that has any resemblance to a yearbook is actually entitled “Informational Booklet of 1899-1900” and has many pictures of the classrooms and of the students and faculty.
The early yearbooks as we know them (1912 and 1914) were named “The Swastika” and had that name and a swastika symbol on their cover. Sometime before 1938 the name “The Swastika” had been replaced with “The Trojan” with the name and a picture of a Trojan on the cover.
At the present time (summer 2007) we have 9 yearbooks dated prior to 1950 and 45 yearbooks dated 1950 to present. This means from 1899 to 2007 the library is missing 52 yearbooks, if one was published each year.
