Read A Book
My library is like a ocean wave
I read until I succeed.
I ride a wave every time I come in.
The library is like my own underwater cave.
The books always get stuck in my head.
I even read when I go to bed.
A.W., 4th grade, 3rd place
The Book
You open the doors
Of your town library
You are filled with
An enormous amount of excitement
You just can't wait to
Get a new book to checkout
The shelves are shinning
All about
You walk up to a book want says
Ride the Wave With Dave and Jave
It looks good
Lets check it out
You open the cover to read
Then pops out a bumblebee!
It flies away
So it is safe to see
I go to the checkout
To get the book
The lady at the counter says
It is a good book
I should take a look
So I say ok
So I took it home that day
Then I say
I'll bring it back
Another day
A.A., 4th grade

A Silly Poem
one day I snook in a library to check out a book
the book was about man that gave a wave a shave
I thought it was dumb so I took it back in large sack with a crumb
on my way home I saw a brave microwave
a guy name Dave Wave holding a comb
and his friend Tommy tsunami who was doing origami
after I fell in a bucket of cream I woke up from my silly dream!

MAKE A WAVE
You walk into the library
You smell the fresh air
You pick out a book
And the librarian says take care
You walk out the door
You grab your bear
And run to your room
and put the bear by your hair
You read the book
And put it in a nook
you thought it was an awesome book
- H.H., 4th grade
Reading
Reading,
Reading is fun,
It reminds me of the sun,
Reading I love,
It is like surfing,
You end a book,
You fall off your surfboard,
And you get back on again,
And start a new book
- M.C., 4th grade

Wave-Surfing
Who's ready to make waves? Let's go, because it's surfing time!
We are going to read while we surf.
Trust me, it's an awesome trick.
We're ready to make waves of reading and reading of waves.
Try to make it bigger than a "tidal wave".
We'll read sports books, young hoosiers, newberrys, novels, and more.
Those waves are smaller than my index finger.
I want waves of reading bigger than a 25 ft. skyscraper.
It's time to read on the waves of the water.
Waves longer than from Washington D.C. to the Pacific.
Make waves... read, Read, REad, REAd, READ!
- C.D., 4th grade, 1st place
Reading
Reading is like a hill,
It goes up, & up,
so many thrills & shrills
You can read about waves,
Even what people crave,
Some books are neamed the wave.
You can read about lots of things,
You can read about what life brings,
It can give you a chill,
Or even a thrill.
Reading is like a hill.
V.V., 4th grade
Waves
When I read about surfing
I get waves in my brain
they wash over me like a train
they are big waves coming for me
them get bigger than a chalkboard
but they always call back to the water
it's like bait waiting to hook me
I never can stay out of the water
not even for a minute

Not There
I'm surfing for a book,
I'm searching for a book,
A book that I can't find,
565SL, 565 ST, 566AB it skipped
Right over him!
I looked in the web,
But it said it was there,
So I looked for a book,
A book that wasn't there!
Oh my,
Why do I cry?
It just wasn't there!

Normal
If there was such thing as normal
Where would we all be?
If we put ourselves in groups of one, two, and three.
Everyone would be the same
Our point of view is the way
I see that it does not matter what we may be
just be yourself, express yourself
You know just be you
Because there is only one of you and only one of ME!

Is it the wind blowing on the water?
Or is it the fish swimming in the water?
It could be the ships on the sea.

My Wait
I sit
At the door
All dy,
And wait
For him
to come home.
My person
Takes forever
To retrieve himself
From what he calls
Work.
And it seems
He arrives at
Around 6 o'clock.
I get bored
At home.
He never wants to play.
But he'll bring home
A bone,
So that is why
I stay.
T. B., 6th grade
I went swimming in a sea of books
Books about nothing at all
Books about kitchens and cooks
Books about winter and fall
I swam through a dictionary
I swam through Huckleberry
I swam through fiction and fact
I swam through cat and the hat
I love books with all my heart
They are full of wondrous speech
They also make me smart
I love to read books on the beach
- Haley R., 2nd place
I went into my library
To take some looks
I saw some stationary
And a wave of books
All of the sudden
I heard a splash
My eyes hit the page
It made a crash
The words popped out at me
Like a scary monster from the sea
I left the library with little speech
I felt like I left a pretty beach
I went home to read my book
A book about a ship out to sea
It was about Captain Hook
So worth the library fee
- Caleb M.
As you sit
You hear the waves
Crash!
You hear the water
Splash!
On the sand
You can smell the salt in the water
Hear the seagulls' wings
As they beat against the wind
The ocean seems to whisper
"Come and play with me"
The water sings to you
the splashing against the sand
Is music to your ears
But to your eyes
You only see words
No beach
No sand
No water
It is the sea and the shore
Of a book
That you have taken a dive into
A splash you have made
At your library
And with your imagination
It is almost as good as the real beach
Almost

Waves at the Library
The sun, waves, bonfires, and camping trips,
I'm talking about awesome summer fun.
Summer is great in all that it is,
this greatness can also be found at a library,
Even though it may seem dull and dreary.
Books are full of fun and adventure,
It's all compact and can even be shown in a picture.
so ride the waves of knowledge at your library,
And dive into a good book this summer.
- Levi R.
Sucked into the Book
I walked into my school library
In the corner there was a book that caught my eye
I opened it and the minute I started to read it I was pulled into it, literally
Behind me was a raring sigh
As I turned to look I saw a huge wave coming at me
It twirled in anger and came crashing down as the world shook
This wave was coming from a huge sea
I ran till I stumbled upon another book
As I opened it I was sucked into yet another story
All around me was the screaming and hollering of some sort of creatures
this was a sight of true gory
It was scary than a bunch of angry teachers
I began to wish I were back at the school
As I found another book I was drawn into it
this book hopping was no longer cool
I found myself in such a small hole I don't know how I fit
I began to think how I was ever to get out of here
When I slipped upon another book
I opened it quickly as I began to feel bugs crawling on my body
I was now standing by Captain Hook
He was surprisingly a Hottie
I just enjoying this weird experience when the bell at my school rang
I woke in a startle with the book still in my hands.

Make a wave
And read a book
In your library
Make a wave
Nothing is bigger
Then the tsunami of Knowledge
You gain when reading a book
So make a wave in your public libary
- Bryan B.
You open your eyes
To find a surprise
The sand on your feet
the breeze on where we meet
Summer is here
So go buy a beer (root beer)
Go to the beach
Learn how to screech
Get a book
Get a little hooked
Have a good summer
Cause once it's over, what a bummer.

Waves
I went to the beach.
There was a library there.

And washed it away.

Summer Love
Nick and Lil meet on the beach
Lil in a dress that's washed in bleach
Nick in trunks, tan and trim
Those washboard abs, looking slim
He surfs the waves
She hides in caves
She's the awkward girl
That makes Nick's fingers curl
Then one day he took her out
His smile made her laugh and shout
she had a great time
Feeling beautiful and divine
Nick and Lil had a summer love
He treated her tender like a dove
But I wouldn't have known about their kiss
If I hadn't read a book like this
- Lindsey H., 3rd place
Pulled into the Book
I sat on my back porch swing, to read a mysterious book.
It seemed so inviting, and each word pulled me in.
When I get to the last word on the page, I blink, and I was in the book.
Cool summers day, in the middle of a beach.
Now for some reason everyone I read about was in panic.
they screamed help him, someone save my little boy.
As an act of impulse, I ran into the water hoping to reach him in time.
As I reached the beach everyone cheered for me, and gave praises to me.
They called me a hero.
I don't want to leave.
I can start a new life here in this book.
I'll never go away.
Truly immortal, within the pages of a book.
- Allison P.
As I walked in to the library to get a book
I saw a strange looking man that was giving me a look
He had shorts on his legs, and very tan skin
He looked to be from the beach, so I wanted to go on in
He was talking about the ocean
But looking at a book about sun tan lotion
I wanted to find a book on beaches
But all I could find were ones on leeches
I finally found a book about sand
I looked at the pages and wanted it in my hand
I love the beach and all that comes with
Sitting on the beach would be quite the gift
So the man came over to give some advice
He told me to come with him, because he had surprise
He took me and my book outside to his plane
And we flew to the beach, and I never complained
- Kelsey Mc.
The New Adventure Book
I walked into the huge town Library,
My imagination started coming alive,
I was waiting all week to get the new adventure book,
I crept through the many mazes of books,
Until I found the right shelf,
there it was the new green book,
I sat down on the couch and opened the book,
I could smell the fresh open air,
All of a sudden I was lying on the sand next to the Ocean,
I couldn't remember how I got here,
I remembered reading the first page of the novel,
That's when I saw a band of pirates marching in a straight line,
Like soldiers off to war,
I thought this wasn't how it's suppose to be,
I saw little boys running around without their mothers,
And I saw a handsome boy, who could fly,
They reminded me of Peter Pan and the lost boys,
Out of the woods came Pocahontas and her Warriors,
They ran toward the pirates and they were making friends,
I was shocked and confused,
So I left that part of the beach and traveled to a small cave,
So I walked inside the cave and there was a might dragon,
The dragon was protecting something,
I stepped forward to get a better view of that something,
He looked mad and kept hollering things in a weird language,
Then he realized I couldn't speak in that language,
He told me to leave the cave and return home,
But I told him I didn't know how to get home,
He talked to the dragon and its voice entered my head,
It said they would take me to the edge of the wake and Dreams,
I climbed on board and guy sate next to me,
We took off and everyone was waving bye to me,
I saw a whole bunch of fairy tale characters,
We finally reached the edge and he kissed my hand good-bye,
And I got close to the edge and he pushed me off,
I fell and fell until I smacked to ground,
I looked around and I realized I was back in the library,
I checked out the book and I waited for the adventure to come again,
But a huge wave got me instead and I realized it was the dragon saying good-bye.

Darkness in the Sunlight
Darkened allies and night of fright.
She doesn't know shat's wrong or right.
Only sixteenand she's at a bar.
The girl is drunk and it's gone too far.
Another girl sits on a beach.
The end is near but not yet reached.
The sun shines bright and the water rolls.
Further and further into the book she's pulled.
The drunken girl fights so hard,
But the stronger boy wins the cards.
Her fitting clothes he ripped and tore,
Are now left lying on the floor.
No matter how bright the sunny day,
Wrapped in this book the girl will stay.
She can feel the tension and the stress.
The pages of the book are a crumpled mess.
Morning comes and her head's inpain.
She's lost, confused, and she feels ashamed.
Three months later the test is pink.
Her mom and dad don't know what to think.
The sand is warm, the water's cool.
Those around think her a fool.
They gawk and laugh and wonder why,
To swim and run she won't even try.
She's not the same person, she's so full of rage.
She blames the baby and the world is her cage.
Her parents said abortion is always a choice.
She said the child should still have a voice.
The beach is filled with voices and tones,
But this girl with the book is all alone.
There on that beach she planned to stay,
Until the tide took her precious book away.
What happened to that youg girl will remain unread,
Unless the girl on the beach buys a new copy instead.
